The Munich Massacre was a attack on Israeli Olympians. This attack took place on September 5, 1972 from 4:31 a.m. till 12:04 a.m. the next day. The terrorist group held responsible for this attack is known as Black September. Five of the eight terrorist connected to this attack were killed and the other three were captured. The attack happened by surprise as the members of the Olympic team were asleep.
The attack killed 11 Olympians and one German policemen. The terrorist hid their weapons in duffel bags and scaled a fence outside the Olympic Village. The attackers had used stolen keys to gain access to the building and sneak there way to the rooms of the Olympians. The attackers had an easy time getting the Olympic hostages as the Israelis did not have guards. The attackers snuck into the rooms and took the hostages and demanded 234 of the “Red Army Faction,” be released .
Yossef Gutfreund was a wrestling referee and the first awakened by the intruders. The man tried to keep the intruders out but was it was a futile attempt as the attackers pushed through. They shot Yossef in the cheek and forced him to help look for other hostages. Yossef led the to apartment 3 , the attackers took hostages and were taking them back to the coaches offices when Yossef attacked the intruders once more. This attack allowed Gad Tsobari to escape through a parking garage but left Yossef dead as the terrorist shot him to death.
I believe that this could have been avoided if the Israeli grouped have had guards or sometime of protection. The attack came out of nowhere and surprised the Olympians leaving them no time to defend themselves. The attackers used AKM assault rifles and forced the Olympians to move to the coaches offices were some confrontations happened and left one dead. 11 of the Olympians would be killed in this attack , 2016 was the first time that tribute was paid to the people in the attack. The attack left the 1972 Olympics in disbelief and horror after what had happened.
